9 (or 12) Day Grand Scottish Islands Tour (Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland) from Inverness

9 (or 12) Day Grand Scottish Islands Private Tour

A Historian-Guided Journey

The Grand Scottish Islands tour is my most comprehensive private journey, bridging the Outer Hebrides with the Northern Isles. Over nine or twelve days, we explore the archaeology, history, and dramatic coastal landscapes of Lewis, Harris and Orkney – with an optional extension to Shetland. This historian-guided tour is designed for those who want to experience the breathtaking scenery and ancient history of these islands at a comfortable pace.

9 Day Grand Scottish Islands Tour (Outer Hebrides and Orkney) from Inverness

Day 1 — Inverness to Isle of Lewis

Departing early from Inverness, we travel to the coastal village of Ullapool to board the ferry for a 2¾ hour crossing of the Minch. Arriving in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis (my home island), we spend the afternoon stepping back through millennia of Hebridean history. We explore the magnificent Neolithic Calanais Standing Stones, the formidable 2,000-year-old Dun Carloway Broch, and the traditional thatched blackhouses that once sheltered island families for generations. We conclude our first day at the secluded Atlantic beach of Dalbeg before returning to Stornoway for our three night stay.

Day 2 — Isle of Harris

Heading south from Stornoway, we cross into the Isle of Harris. The drive along the Atlantic coastline reveals the breath-taking white sands and turquoise waters of Seilebost and Nisabost. At the southern tip of the island, we visit Rodel to explore the medieval St Clement’s Church – home to one of Scotland’s most remarkable 16th-century tomb carvings. After a late afternoon pause in the ferry port of Tarbert, we journey back through the rugged North Harris hills to Stornoway.

Day 3 — Isle of Lewis

After some morning free time to enjoy the island capital of Stornoway, we venture west into the remote parish of Uig. This is a landscape of dramatic coastal scenery, where we explore the stunning Atlantic beaches of Ardroil, Valtos, and Reef. After an afternoon immersed in the wild panoramas and history of the west coast, we return to Stornoway.

Day 4 — Isle of Lewis to Inverness

We spend our final morning at the Butt of Lewis – the most northerly point of the Hebrides – where a lonely lighthouse stands guard over towering cliffs and the crashing Atlantic waves. Returning to Stornoway, we visit Museum nan Eilean within the gothic splendor of Lews Castle to see the world-famous Lewis Chessmen. The early afternoon ferry carries us back across the Minch to Ullapool, followed by a scenic drive through the mountainous scenery of the Northwest Highlands as we return to Inverness for our two night stay.

Day 5 — Inverness

We break our west and northern journeys with a relaxed day touring out of Inverness. In the morning we visit Culloden Battlefield to explore the dramatic history of the Highland clans and the Jacobite uprisings. After walking the battlefield where the 1745-6 Rising met its tragic end, we journey a short distance to the Bronze Age Clava Cairns. Dating back over 4000 years, these standing stones offer a fascinating glimpse into the ancient past of the Highlands. In the afternoon we follow the legendary banks of Loch Ness to explore the medieval ruins of Urquhart Castle, once one of the most formidable strongholds in the Highlands before our return to Inverness.

Day 6 — Inverness to Orkney

Depart Inverness for a scenic three hour journey through the North Highlands to the ferry port of Scrabster. This coastal drive offers stunning views and a stop in the historic town of Dornoch. We then cross the Pentland Firth (1½ hour ferry sailing) passing the iconic Old Man of Hoy, before arriving in the picturesque port of Stromness. The late-afternoon is dedicated to a tour of Skara Brae, a remarkably preserved 5,000-year-old Neolithic village, before we settle into the historic capital of Kirkwall for our three night stay.

Day 7 — Orkney

Our first full day on Orkney is spent uncovering the mysteries of the Orkney mainland. We explore the Neolithic standing stones of Stenness, the monumental Ring of Brodgar, and the 2,000-year-old Broch of Gurness. The journey includes a visit to the chambered tomb of Maeshowe and the poignant Italian Chapel, built during WWII. We conclude our day in Kirkwall with time to admire the red sandstone majesty of St Magnus Cathedral and the ruins of the Earl’s Palace.

Day 8 — Orkney

Our second full day on Orkney provides the opportunity to venture beyond the main sites. We can focus on the dramatic Atlantic coastline, visiting the towering cliffs of Yesnaby and the tidal island of Birsay, along with free time in Kirkwall – or perhaps enjoy a tasting at the Highland Park or Scapa whisky distilleries. Alternatively, for those interested in Orkney's naval history, we can sail across Scapa Flow to the Isle of Hoy, visiting the acclaimed Scapa Flow Museum along with the secluded, towering cliffs of Rackwick Bay.

Day 9 — Orkney to Inverness

Departing from Kirkwall, we head to Stromness for the mid-morning ferry back to the Scottish mainland. Our return journey to Inverness follows a beautiful coastal route, featuring a mid-afternoon visit to the breathtaking Dunrobin Castle. With its towering spires and formal gardens overlooking the sea, the castle provides a beautiful finale to our exploration of the North before we arrive back in Inverness.

Day 9 – Shetland (South Mainland): Arriving in Lerwick harbour in the early morning (7.30am), we enjoy breakfast on the ferry before exploring the south mainland of Shetland. Sumburgh Head is our first stop – a haven for seabirds (including puffins from mid-May to July). Next is Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse settlement which spans over four thousand years. The afternoon takes us on a beautiful coastal drive to the breath-taking St Ninian's Isle where you can hike across the sands to the island before we return north to Lerwick for our overnight stay.

Day 10 — Shetland (Isle of Unst): A day to explore the most northernly inhabited island in Scotland – Unst. Departing from Lerwick we drive north to catch the 20-minute ferry crossing to Yell. After a scenic drive through Yell we take the short 10-minute ferry crossing to Unst. We spend the late morning and early afternoon exploring the island, with visits to Muness Castle, Haroldswick, Burra Firth and Saxa Vord, before our return to Lerwick in the late afternoon.

Day 11 — Shetland (North Mainland): Departing from Lerwick we head towards the north Shetland mainland. The 12 day tour is available on Tuesday start day from Inverness.

What's included in the tour price?

Tours are exclusively for your private group only (up to 3 persons) and prices are per tour. I only offer private tours and do not combine individuals or separate groups – if your group size is less than 3 the advertised tour price still applies. Your private tour price includes:

  • Private tour for your group only (1, 2 or 3 persons)
  • An experienced driver-guide and historian (John Alasdair Macdonald)
  • A comfortable touring vehicle with ample space for passengers and luggage
  • All standard ferry tickets (I take care of all ferry bookings)
  • All taxes and fees
What's excluded?

The tour price does not include your accommodation, overnight ferry cabin costs (details below), entrance fees or meals and refreshments.

Where should I book accommodation?

For the standard 9 day tour I recommend you book accommodation in:

  • Stornoway (Day 1, 2 and 3)
  • Inverness (Day 4 and 5)
  • Kirkwall (Day 6, 7 and 8)

For the extended 12 day tour I recommend you book accommodation in:

  • Stornoway (Day 1, 2 and 3)
  • Inverness (Day 4 and 5)
  • Kirkwall (Day 6 and 7)
  • Lerwick (Day 9 and 10)

Whilst I do not book accommodation directly, I am always happy to offer advice on where to stay and eat. Your tour quote will include a list of recommended accommodation options for our overnight locations along with suggestions for evening meals.

Where does the tour start from?

Enjoy the ease of a private pickup — I will meet you directly at your Inverness accommodation on the morning of Day 1 to begin the tour. At the end of the tour I will drop you off at your preferred Inverness location.

How much walking is involved?

Most locations involve short walks from the vehicle to viewpoints, castles or historic sites. The pace is relaxed and there is plenty of time to enjoy each stop. If you would prefer to skip a particular walk or explore at your own pace, that is absolutely fine on a private tour.

How much luggage can I bring?

The tour vehicle (Honda CR-V) comfortably accommodates up to three passengers with the rear boot (trunk) for luggage allowing for one medium bag/suitcase per person and one small day bag/backpack per person. For private groups of three, if you are unsure about luggage capacity, please let me know the size of your suitcases and I can check against available space.

Can the tour itinerary be customised?

The tour itinerary is based on many years of guiding experience, previous client feedback, and practical travel timings. However, there is some flexibility and the itinerary can often be adapted in advance to suit particular interests or requests where possible – in particular, Day 5 around Inverness has a flexible itinerary. Please mention any requests in the 'Extra Information' section when completing a Tour Enquiry Form.

What about overnight ferry accommodation on the Shetland Extension?

During the extended tour we take two overnight ferry sailings where you can book overnight en-suite cabins. Prices depend on your cabin choice (for example, for 2026 bookings, a twin outer cabin in peak season is between £153 and £190 per cabin depending on class). The tour quote will include full details of the cabin options and their current prices. More information about the cabin choices can be found on the Northlink Ferries Website.

Why is Day 8 (on the Shetland Extension) a late night?

Day 8 is a long extended tour day due to the late night boarding for the overnight ferry (our only ferry option for a tour that includes Orkney and Shetland). We will start at 9am and tour around Orkney until 5pm. After a leisurely evening meal in Kirkwall, we take a final scenic drive (approx. 1 hour) before joining the ferry queue by 10pm. The ferry generally arrives into Kirkwall at 11pm and we are usually in our cabins by 11.45pm. The ferry arrives in Shetland at 7.30am the following morning and we will leave the boat by 8.30am. To ensure a comfortable first day in Shetland, we tend to finish our touring by the mid-afternoon so that you can relax in Lerwick. To visit Shetland (only) without this late departure on the overnight ferry, please consider the 5 Day Shetland and Highlands Tour from Inverness.

What about the ferry sailings?

Shetland is in the North Atlantic and the seas can be choppy during ferry sailings even in the summer months, though most are comfortable crossings. Ferry sailings are generally reliable in the summer months, but delays and cancellations can occasionally occur. While we cannot be responsible for any extra accommodation, food or other costs that clients may incur due to ferry delays and cancellations, we will make every effort to adapt the tour to minimise disruption. Please note that no refunds will be given for tour and itinerary changes due to ferry changes and cancellations.

What will the weather be like?

The Scottish Highlands and Islands are renowned for changeable weather and even in the summer months we are likely to experience some wet and windy weather conditions on tours. Shetland, in particular though, is a land of 'four seasons in one day'! As such we always recommend a light waterproof jacket for all tours and decent footwear that you do not mind getting a little bit muddy or wet.

How do I book the tour?

The first step is simply to complete the Tour Enquiry Form with your preferred travel dates. I will then reply with availability and a detailed tour quotation (with absolutely no obligation to proceed at this stage). I usually reply to enquiries within 24 hours.

Can I just chat about a tour or ask some questions before booking?

Of course! I’m always happy to answer any questions and help you feel confident about your trip. You can reach me in whichever way is easiest for you:

There’s absolutely no obligation — this is just a chance to discuss your ideas and make sure the tour is the right fit for you.
